About the product
Meet Moonbeam, the Cedar Kite. She is a Japanese dwarf flying squirrel, and she is real. Her kind lives only in Japan, on the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, in mountain forests and in the planted cedar and cypress forests beside them. Her body is about as long as a grown-up's hand, 14 to 20 centimeters (5.5 to 8 inches), and her flat tail is about two-thirds as long. She is about as heavy as a small apple, 100 to 173 grams (3.5 to 6 ounces). Her back is soft grey-brown, her belly and cheeks are pale, and her eyes are big and round. She has no wings. A fold of furry skin stretches from her wrists to her ankles, and when she leaps and spreads her legs, the skin catches the air and she glides from tree to tree. Her close cousin, the Ezo flying squirrel of Hokkaido, has been measured gliding as far as about 50 meters (160 feet), about half a football field. Nobody has measured the glide of Moonbeam's own kind yet. She comes out after sunset and rests in a tree hollow by day. She cannot dig a home of her own, so she uses hollows that old trees already have, and nest boxes that people hang in the trees. Her nest is often made of cedar bark split into fine strips. She eats leaves, buds, bark, seeds and cones. She does not sleep through the winter. She keeps coming out at night, and in autumn and winter some squirrels share one nest. Scientists are still finding out why. Her superpower is SKY CAPE. This is the Keepsake version from the Fenekie Explorer Club, a small team exploring the natural world together, one wild animal every week: Moonbeam exactly as the storybook paints her, brush marks and all, on a blank chosen for how it feels and where it comes from. 1% of everything we make goes back to the wild. Moonbeam is painted on a large organic cotton tote in Oyster, perched three-quarter on a short cut branch with her big dark eyes and small smile turned toward you.
