Meet Dash, the Sea Arrow. He is an Atlantic puffin, and he is real. His kind lives on the cold North Atlantic Ocean, and comes ashore only in spring and summer to nest on grassy cliff-tops and islands. The rest of the year he lives far out at sea. Puffins nest on both sides of the ocean, from Maine and Newfoundland across to Iceland, Norway, Britain and Ireland. His body is about as long as a school ruler, 26 to 29 centimeters (10 to 11.5 inches), and he is about as heavy as a soccer ball, 310 to 550 grams (11 to 19 ounces). In the nesting season his back and wings are black, his belly is white, his face is pale, and his feet are bright orange. His big striped bill is blue-grey and yellow at the base and red-orange at the tip. He flies at about 63 kilometers an hour (39 miles an hour), beating his wings about nine times every second. Then he dives, and the same two wings swim him through the water while his feet steer. He catches most of his fish within 30 meters (98 feet) of the surface, and most dives last 20 to 30 seconds. He can catch fish after fish on one dive trip without dropping the ones he already holds, because spines on his tongue and the roof of his mouth hold them in place. About ten fish is a normal load, and the British record is 62. The fish hang crosswise in his bill, not neatly head to tail. He digs his burrow with his bill and his feet, kicking the soil out behind him like a dog. When a pair meets at the burrow, they tap and rub their big bills together, and the neighbors often waddle over to watch. After the summer the bright plates on his bill fall off, and they grow back the next spring. His superpower is TURBO FLAPPERS.
