About the product
Meet Ribbon, the Canopy Crown. He is a curl-crested aracari, and he is real. His kind lives in the lowland rainforest of the south-western Amazon, in Peru, Brazil and Bolivia. He is about 42 to 46 centimeters (17 to 18 inches) long from bill tip to tail tip. That is about the length of a school ruler and a half. His back and rump are red. His wings are dark green. His belly is yellow, with one wide red band across it. A ring of bare sky-blue skin circles each eye. His bill has an orange top edge and a cream lower half. Toucan bills are built like a light foam inside. Most of what he eats is fruit, and figs are on the list. He travels in a flock of up to twelve. At night up to five grown-ups and their young can sleep together in one old woodpecker hole. His call is a loud rising eeee-yak. On top of his head sits a crown of shiny black curls, like small pieces of glossy plastic. No other aracari has them, and Birds of the World says no other bird does. Scientists have not worked out what the curls are for. Aracaris take a berry by the tip of the bill and flip it up with a jerk of the head. Then they catch it at the back of the throat and swallow. His family calls it FLIP-CATCH BEAK.
This is the Explorer version from the Fenekie Explorer Club, a small team exploring the natural world together, one wild animal every week: Ribbon painted the way he is painted in the book, sized to read from across the playground, on an everyday blank at an everyday price. 1% of everything we make goes back to the wild. Ribbon perches side-on on a short straight twig across the front of a plain canvas tote, his tail hanging down. It is the one for library books, snacks and the walk to school.
