Meet Dewey, the Moss Piglet. He is a tardigrade, and he is real, and he is almost certainly living in the moss on your garden wall right now. Grown up he is about half a millimetre long, the length of one grain of salt from the table. He has eight stubby legs, four claws on each one, and the back pair point backwards so he can hold on to a moss leaf while the wind takes the rest of the world. His mouth is a perfect round O with no teeth in it at all. When the moss dries out and the water goes, Dewey does the most astonishing thing an animal can do: he pulls his legs in, squeezes out almost all his own water, shrinks to about a sixth of his size, and becomes a little barrel called a tun. Then he waits. In laboratories, tardigrades have waited more than thirty years. One drop of water, and minutes later he is walking again. That is his superpower, and it is called STOP TIME.
